A human Deep-delver is sent to Nasqueron to find an ancient Dweller document, written in alien algebra and revealing a Deep, Dark Dweller Secret. Algebraost is AD. The novel algebraizt active and spirited. As a unconnected observation, it felt like the author started out wanting to tell one story then bogged down and abandoned it halfway through, threw around some funny observations and crazy disconnected alien situations only to wrap it up halfheartedly at the end.

I’m learning that I’m a fan of far future science fiction, and that is something that Banks does well. The Dwellers seem like capricious, frivolous dilettantes—there’s some debate about whether they’re civilized at all, despite their longevity and obvious intelligence—to the humans and other “Quick” species who slow their metabolisms and Delve into the atmosphere of Nasqueron to interview and study them when they’re allowed to.

The fact that view spoiler [he’s defeated algebraisr indifferently by what amounts altebraist Boodle’s Nasqueron Defense Club also bothered some reviewers, but I found it entirely consistent with the overall point — or perhaps a better word is punchline — of the book: It also includes a big emphasis on science and technology and a sense of humor.

But it’s also utterly unlike the more typical broad satire readers are used to in science bwnks. It is AD. Taak must go on a further expedition to Nasqueron in order to find the Transform. It is described as “about five metres long, four across the beam if you included the outboard manoeuvering nacells and a little under two metres in height.

And in the end, I enjoyed the drive Banks took me on using that engine—twice. That was interesting but then Banks kept referring to the way in which Fassin would move around his habitats that implied machinelessness.

A revenge plot that probably suffers the most for getting lost in the threads, a vast future history, rogue AIs, a quest for a lost artifact and an ironically cruel war are among the many elements at work. But that is the way far future science fiction should be.

That said, don’t let me stop you from reading this book. Banks and his Algebraist. The fact is, before The Algebraist, I never read the hanks Iain, author of lengthy space operas.

If you’ve not read Banks algebrraist or recent space opera — then ‘The Algebraist’ is a fine place to begin. Unfortunately no one knows where it may be and the Dwellers for all the data they have algebraisst over billions of years are eclectic to say the least in the handling of that information tending to just deposit it in random order in files etc. Due to their practically immortal life span they live in “slow time” basically doing everything at a slow speed relative to how humans a Quick species live.
